Maytronics & YMCA-CF Pan Am Games

Olympic Gold Winner Rowdy Gaines Weighs In

Swimmer Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines, IV, is a three-time Olympic Gold Medalist.

A proud Tiger, he’s said to remain one of Auburn University’s “most recognizable … swimmers of all time.” From 1978 to 1980, Gaines and three other swimmers dominated the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays, winning three NCAA titles under the guidance of then Coach Richard Quick and Asst. Coach John Asmuth.

Gaines quickly became known, ’round the globe, as “the world’s fastest swimmer.”

When he was just a sophomore, Gaines led the Tigers to a sixth place finish at the NCAA Championships. By 1980, he was considered “practically invincible” and was chosen to represent the U.S. Olympic Team. After the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games boycott, Gaines won three gold medals—swimming in the 1984 LA Olympic Games.

The Winterhaven, Florida, native is now VP of Aquatics at YMCA of Central Florida, in Orlando. The facility will host the Pan American Masters Championships, a biennial adult competitive swimming tournament, in July and August. Gaines said, of the Summer event, “5,000 athletes on our campus will all be looking up at that beautiful Wave 300.”

What could he possibly mean? He’s referring to YMCA-CF’s recent partnership with Maytronics U.S. As an event sponsor, Maytronics’ banner will loom large, waving high above the facility’s three Olympic-sized pools—which hold nearly 2 Million gallons of water—and cheering on athletes, as they compete in water sports.

“While this is just one of 40 events we’ll be holding this year at our Aquatic Center, partnering with Maytronics makes so much sense. We’re excited about the possibilities this holds for the Pan Am Games and for future events co-hosted by us in conjunction with Maytronics.”

Now that’s Gold Medal praise if ever I heard it! Learn more about Maytronics, YMCA-CF and the Pan Am below.

“(Theirs) is one of the most respected Aquatic Centers in the country,” USMS CEO Dawson Hughes told Swimming World magazine of YMCA-CF. “They have experience hosting large events and have the facility, volunteers and community support to showcase this international event.”

“(The games) will attract … athletes from 43 swimming federations in North, South, Central America and the Caribbean,” added Mel Goldstein, UANA Masters Committee Chairman. “The Pan American (spans) Aquatic disciplines: Diving, Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo, Swimming and Open Water.”

Goldstein anticipates “the largest Masters event—other than a World Championship—ever held in North America.” Gaines, who’ll be a 50-meter freestyle and relay participant, expects the 19-day event to attract athletes and families from across the aforementioned regions, which include the U.S. and Canada.
